Unlike standard bathroom materials, plastic sheeting, greenboard, or shower-style waterproofing products, a traditional sauna should use a sauna-appropriate foil vapor barrier on the warm side of the wall assembly. The reflective aluminum surface helps direct heat back into the sauna, while the vapor barrier layer helps reduce moisture movement into the insulation and framing.

Recommended Sauna Wall Assembly

For a traditional sauna, we generally recommend the following wall and ceiling assembly:

1. Framing

Start with properly framed walls and ceiling.

2. Insulation

Use mineral wool or another sauna-appropriate insulation inside the wall and ceiling cavities.

3. Sauna Vapor Barrier Foil

Install the sauna foil vapor barrier on the warm side of the assembly, facing the sauna interior.

4. Furring Strips / Air Gap

Install furring strips over the foil to create a small air gap behind the interior wood cladding.

5. Sauna Wood Cladding

Finish with sauna-safe tongue-and-groove wood such as cedar, thermo-aspen, thermo-spruce, alder, or other appropriate sauna wood.

This assembly helps manage heat, vapor, condensation, and long-term sauna performance.

Important Installation Notes

For best results:

  • Install on the warm side of the insulated sauna wall or ceiling
  • Keep the reflective foil side facing the sauna interior
  • Overlap seams according to installation best practices
  • Seal seams with high-temperature aluminum foil tape
  • Seal around penetrations, corners, vents, and edges
  • Install furring strips over the foil before interior cladding
  • Avoid puncturing the foil unnecessarily
  • Do not use as the finished visible interior surface
  • Do not install behind materials that are not appropriate for sauna heat
  • Confirm all heater, ventilation, electrical, and lighting requirements before closing walls

A sauna vapor barrier is part of the wall system. It should be installed carefully before the interior sauna wood is applied.

What Not to Use Instead

For the heated walls and ceiling of a traditional sauna, we do not recommend using:

  • Greenboard as the primary interior sauna wall material
  • Standard drywall behind the hot sauna interior
  • Plastic sheeting as the sauna vapor barrier
  • Shower-style waterproofing membranes unless confirmed sauna/high-heat rated
  • Standard bathroom waterproofing products inside the hot wall assembly
  • Paint, caulk, adhesives, or membranes not rated for sauna heat

Traditional saunas should be built with sauna-appropriate materials that can handle high heat, humidity, and repeated heating and cooling.
