Enhance your existing sauna

Turn the sauna you already own into a red-light and near-infrared therapy space.

Sauna Elite stands freely inside your existing traditional or infrared sauna — no rebuild, no wiring changes, no waiting for a new cabin. Every component, from the LEDs to the housing, is built to withstand the heat, humidity, and steam that most red-light panels aren’t rated for.

What this means for you

Your next 20 minutes in the sauna can also be your red-light session. One sit. Two therapies. No extra time carved out of your day.

The idea behind Sauna Elite

Sauna heat and red light are two different therapies. That is the point.

Traditional and infrared saunas work on your body thermally — they raise skin and blood temperature to trigger cardiovascular and heat-shock responses. Red and near-infrared light work photochemically — the light is absorbed by an enzyme in your mitochondria called cytochrome c oxidase, which nudges your cells to produce more ATP energy and reduce oxidative stress.

Because heat and light travel completely different biological pathways, they do not compete for the same resource. They stack.

SAUNA HEAT WORKS ON YOUR CIRCULATION. LIGHT WORKS INSIDE YOUR CELLS. YOU CAN HAVE BOTH IN THE SAME 20 MINUTES.
What this means for you

You’re not choosing between sauna and red light. You’re using both, at the same time, from one seat — and getting the benefits of two independently-studied modalities out of a single ritual.

Depth of reach

Heat and light reach the body in different ways.

Traditional Finnish sauna bathing at 176 °F (80 °C) drives vasodilation, sweating, and the whole-body heat-stress response that decades of Finnish cohort research have linked to cardiovascular and longevity benefits (Kukkonen-Harjula et al., Eur J Appl Physiol 1989, PMID 2759081). Direct intramuscular measurements during a 45-minute sauna session show muscle temperature rising about +2 °F (+1.1 °C) at ~1.3″ depth, with negligible effect below 3.8 cm (Reed et al., J Appl Physiol 2025, PMID 40331900). Heat works from the skin inward, through blood flow and conductive warming.

Red light at 660 nm reaches roughly 1–3 mm into the skin. Near-infrared at 850 nm reaches roughly 3–5 mm into the deeper dermis and subcutis, and continues into muscle at reduced intensity — where it is absorbed by mitochondria as a photochemical signal rather than as heat (Ash et al., Lasers Med Sci 2017, PMID 28900751; mechanism per Hamblin 2018, PMID 29164625).

Neither is “better.” They are two different tools. Sauna heat drives circulation and the heat-stress response the Finnish literature is built on. Red and near-infrared light signal directly to cells the heat is already reaching. Sauna Elite lets you use both in the same 20 minutes.

How deep the light reaches: red at 660 nm penetrates ~1–3 mm into the epidermis and superficial dermis; near-infrared at 850 nm reaches ~3–5 mm into the deeper dermis and subcutis, and continues into muscle at reduced intensity. Modeled from Ash et al., Lasers Med Sci 2017 — tissue-optical modeling of red/NIR.
Figure 1 — How deep the light reaches.
SAUNA HEAT DRIVES CIRCULATION. RED AND NEAR-INFRARED LIGHT SIGNAL YOUR CELLS. USE BOTH IN THE SAME 20 MINUTES.
What this means for you

Your sauna session already does what sauna does best — circulation, sweat, the whole-body heat-stress response. Sauna Elite adds a second, complementary signal: 660 nm red light at the skin and collagen layer, and 850 nm near-infrared reaching into the deeper tissues below — muscle, joint capsule, and connective tissue. Both wavelengths act as a photochemical cue to the mitochondria in those cells. Two therapies. One 20-minute sit.

The chain from mitochondria to how you feel

From cell biology to what shows up in your life.

The mechanism is not mystical — it just has a few steps. Here is the ladder from the science to the felt result:

Figure 2: The photobiomodulation ladder. Light at 660 and 850 nm is absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria. ATP production rises. Nitric oxide is released. Blood flow increases and inflammation resolves. Skin looks calmer, muscles recover more completely, sleep deepens, energy holds.
Figure 2 — From cell biology to what you notice.
What this means for you

You don’t need to become a mitochondrial biologist to use this panel. The chain is straightforward: light in → more cellular energy → faster recovery, better skin, and less soreness in the days that follow. The heat handles cardiovascular and heat-shock responses; the light handles the cellular energy.

Wunsch & Matuschka (PMID 24286286) describes 611–650 / 570–850 nm photobiomodulation as non-thermal.

How to use your panel

Three ways to use Sauna Elite — skin, recovery, and full body.

Figure 3: A considered dose. Three protocols by intention. Skin and collagen at 12 to 18 inches for 8 to 10 minutes. Recovery at 6 to 12 inches for 10 to 15 minutes. Full body at 18 to 24 inches for 15 to 20 minutes. Numbers offered as guidance, not prescription.

Sequencing inside the sauna

Because your sauna sit already sets the clock, we recommend running the light for the whole session and letting the light dose accumulate while heat and vasodilation build in the background.

Wipe sweat off your skin periodically — a film of sweat scatters light and reduces the effective dose. Keep sweat away from any electrical connections. Always follow your sauna manufacturer’s temperature and session guidance.

What this means for you

The panel adapts to whatever sauna practice you already have. You don’t need to change the way you sauna — you just add light to it.

How it stacks up

Why Sauna Elite is built differently.

Precision 30° lenses — light on you, not the walls

Most red-light panels use bare LEDs or wide 60° lenses that spread light across a broad cone. A wide cone looks bright, but at real treatment distances a large share of that output lands on the sauna walls and ceiling rather than on your body.

Sauna Elite uses precision 30° lenses that focus each LED’s output into a tighter beam. The same electrical input delivers more irradiance on-target and holds it deeper into tissue as you step back to comfortable sauna distances.

Standard 60° panel
Beam cone ~60° wide spread

Irradiance falloff Steep — drops fast beyond 6″

Sauna Elite (30° lenses)
Beam cone Focused 30°
Where the light goes Concentrated on you
Irradiance falloff More gradual — usable at real sauna distances
Useful treatment distance 6″–18″+ from panel
What this means for you

You get more of the light you paid for. Sit at a comfortable distance from the panel and the 30° lenses keep the dose on your body instead of the surrounding sauna walls.

Rated for a real sauna, not a living room

A 130°F PANEL DOES NOT BELONG IN A 190°F SAUNA. YOUR EQUIPMENT SHOULD OUT-RATE YOUR CABIN.
What this means for you

Most red-light panels are rated to living-room temperatures. Some “sauna-rated” competitors max out at 150–186°F — below the operating range of a properly heated Finnish or high-temp infrared sauna. Sauna Elite is rated to 215°F, so your equipment does not become the ceiling on how hot you can run your sauna.

Where the science comes from

The evidence behind red/NIR light + sauna — named studies.

An honest note first: there are currently no human randomized trials of red/near-infrared light delivered inside a sauna. Sauna Elite’s position rests on two well-evidenced, independently-studied therapies with distinct mechanisms — not a claimed synergy trial that does not yet exist. Every citation below points to the primary source.

On red and near-infrared light

  1. Mechanism: Red/NIR light is absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase, increasing ATP and modulating oxidative stress in a biphasic dose response. Hamblin MR, AIMS Biophysics 2017, PMID 28748217.
  2. Skin & collagen: 113 subjects treated with 611–650 or 570–850nm light — blinded evaluators found significant improvement in skin complexion, roughness, and intradermal collagen density. Wunsch & Matuschka, Photomed Laser Surg 2014, PMID 24286286.
  3. Muscle recovery: Bayesian network meta-analysis of DOMS interventions — photobiomodulation and sauna both significantly outperformed placebo at 48 hours. Chen et al., Journal of Pain Research 2025.

On sauna

  1. Cardiovascular: 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men, followed a median of 20.7 years. 4–7 sessions/week gave a hazard ratio of 0.37 for sudden cardiac death versus 1 session/week. Laukkanen T et al., JAMA Internal Medicine 2015, PMID 25705824.
  2. Athletic recovery: In ten physically active men, 30 minutes of far-infrared sauna bathing after a maximal endurance session produced a small but significant improvement in counter-movement jump versus sitting at rest, and serum cortisol declined over the sauna-plus-recovery period; no recovery advantage was seen after strength training. Mero et al., SpringerPlus 2015, PMC4493260.
  3. Heat depth: Intramuscular probes during a 45-minute sauna session showed muscle temperature rose about +2 °F (+1.1 °C) at ~1.3″ depth with no change in core temperature — the thermic effect was negligible beyond 3.8 cm below the skin. Heat reaches the outer tissues; red/NIR light reaches the deeper cellular layer that heat doesn’t signal. Reed et al., J Appl Physiol 2025, PMID 40331900.

Sauna Elite is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Studies referenced above establish physiological mechanisms and outcomes for red/NIR light and sauna use in general populations; they do not represent claims about the Sauna Elite panel specifically. Consult your physician before starting any new therapy protocol.

Glossary.

Red light (visible)
Wavelengths roughly 600–700nm. Absorbed by copper centers in cytochrome c oxidase. Best studied for skin and surface effects.
Near-infrared (NIR) light
Wavelengths roughly 800–900nm. Invisible to the human eye — some phone cameras can partially capture it depending on their IR-cut filter. Reaches deeper tissue than red.
Far-infrared (FIR)
Wavelengths of 3–100 micrometers. This is what infrared saunas emit. Works thermally, not photochemically. Very different from near-infrared light.
Photobiomodulation (PBM)
The clinical term for red/NIR light therapy. Describes non-thermal photochemical effects on cells.
Irradiance
How much light energy reaches a surface, measured in mW/cm². Higher isn’t always better — light has a biphasic dose response.
J/cm² (dose)
Total energy delivered over a session. Irradiance × time. The therapeutic target for many outcomes sits in the 10–60 J/cm² range.
IPX5
An enclosure rating meaning the panel resists sustained low-pressure water jets from any direction — appropriate for the humidity and steam of a traditional sauna.
Heat-shock protein (HSP)
Proteins your cells produce in response to heat stress. Part of why regular sauna use has cardiovascular and longevity signals in the epidemiology.

Recommended treatment distance is 6–24 inches (15–60 cm) — the range where EMF exposure is comparable to background environmental readings.

How to read these numbers. Irradiance is the light-power density delivered to your skin, measured in milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm²). Peer-reviewed photobiomodulation research typically uses 20–200 mW/cm² — Sauna Elite delivers well within this therapeutic range at standard treatment distances (6–24 inches). At usable distance, our magnetic-field exposure drops to 0.0–0.1 G — comparable to background environmental readings.

Peer-Reviewed Photobiomodulation

What the Research Actually Shows

Sauna Elite uses the two most-studied red and near-infrared wavelengths in peer-reviewed photobiomodulation (PBM) research. Below are representative findings on how these wavelengths interact with the body.

Skin & Collagen

Improved skin appearance and collagen density

A prospective, randomized, controlled trial in 136 volunteers using polychromatic red (611–650 nm) and red/near-infrared (570–850 nm) light — non-LED, non-thermal sources — showed significantly improved skin complexion, reduced skin roughness, and ultrasonographically measured increases in intradermal collagen density after 30 sessions.

Wunsch A, Matuschka K. Photomed Laser Surg, 2014 (PMID 24286286). Sauna Elite uses 660 nm red + 850 nm near-infrared LEDs, within the wavelength ranges tested.

Facial Rejuvenation

~30% reduction in periocular wrinkle volume

A randomized split-face trial in 137 women applied red (660 nm) and amber (590 nm) LED light in 10 sessions over 4 weeks and measured a significant reduction in periocular wrinkle volume (31.6% red; 29.9% amber) and improved quality-of-life scores.

Mota LR et al. Photobiomodul Photomed Laser Surg, 2023 (PMID 36780572). Study used red + amber; Sauna Elite pairs red (660 nm) with near-infrared (850 nm).

Muscle Recovery

Reduced soreness and faster recovery post-exercise

A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis found that photobiomodulation therapy improved muscle recovery outcomes — including reduced soreness and lower creatine kinase — comparable to or better than cryotherapy in many measures.

Systematic review and meta-analysis, PubMed, 2022

Sauna Elite red light therapy panel glowing red in ambient darkness

Beyond skin — the 850 nm near-infrared wavelength reaches muscle and joint tissue, where the next set of clinical findings apply.

Athletic Performance

Improved sleep and endurance in trained athletes

A 14-day whole-body red light protocol in elite female basketball players significantly improved sleep quality (PSQI), serum melatonin levels, and endurance performance versus placebo control.

Zhao J, et al. Journal of Athletic Training

Deep Tissue

Muscle function and recovery in ICU patients

A randomized, triple-blind, sham-controlled trial of red/NIR LED photobiomodulation reduced ICU length of stay and improved muscle function in critically ill patients — a strong signal for the wavelength combination's physiological effect on tissue.

Pereira Neto R, et al. Journal of Biophotonics

Comprehensive Review

Photobiomodulation in human muscle tissue

A review of 46 clinical trials (n=1,045 participants) concluded that red and near-infrared photobiomodulation can increase muscle mass gained after training, reduce post-exercise inflammation, and lower oxidative stress in muscle biopsies.

Ferraresi C, et al. Journal of Biophotonics, 2016

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — that is what Sauna Elite was built for. It is rated to 215°F operating temperature and carries an IPX5 water-resistance rating for humidity and steam.

Standard red-light panels — and even most panels marketed as sauna-rated — top out well below Sauna Elite's ceiling, which is why extended use inside a properly heated sauna can void their warranty or degrade the LEDs.

They are lit — they are emitting 850nm near-infrared light, which is below the threshold of human vision.

This is exactly how a dual-wavelength 660nm / 850nm panel is supposed to look.

Red light at 660nm is visible and penetrates roughly 1–3 mm into the skin — best documented for skin, complexion, and collagen outcomes.

Near-infrared at 850nm is invisible to the human eye and penetrates roughly 3–5 mm into the deeper dermis and subcutis (Ash et al., Lasers Med Sci 2017). Sauna Elite emits both wavelengths simultaneously so you get surface and deeper-tissue exposure in a single session.

They work on completely different biological pathways — heat is thermal (raising skin and blood temperature to drive cardiovascular and heat-shock responses) and light is photochemical (absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria to increase cellular ATP). Because they don't compete for the same mechanism, they stack.

An honest note: there is currently no randomized trial of red light delivered inside a sauna. Sauna Elite lets you take two well-evidenced therapies in one sit — but we do not claim a synergy trial that does not yet exist.

Most protocols land in the 10–20 minute range per treatment area. Because you're typically running Sauna Elite during a sauna sit, the sauna's own tolerance window — 15 to 30 minutes for most people — sets the practical ceiling.

Beginners: 10–15 minutes at 140–160°F, 2–3 times per week. Standard: 15–25 minutes at 160–185°F, 3–5 times per week. Advanced: 20–30 minutes up to 215°F, 4–6 times per week.

For skin and face, 12 to 24 inches. For muscle and recovery, 6 to 12 inches. For full-body wellness, 12 to 18 inches.

Distance interacts with session length. Closer means a higher irradiance per minute so you can shorten the session; farther means a lower dose per minute but wider coverage of the body.

Irradiance is a measured 113 mW/cm² at 6 inches and 57.6 mW/cm² at 12 inches — high enough to deliver a therapeutic dose in a normal-length session without joining the arms-race numbers some brands publish theoretically.

EMF is measured at 0.6 gauss at 6 inches and 0.0 to 0.1 gauss at 12 inches — comfortably low at any normal treatment distance.

Yes. Sauna Elite is engineered from the LEDs out to survive sauna heat and humidity, but the same panel works beautifully in a home gym, bathroom, yoga studio, recovery room, bedroom, or office.

You paid for a panel that can take heat — using it in a cool room only means it will last even longer.

Panel placement away from the heater must be a minimum of your sauna heater manufacturer's recommended safety distance to combustible materials. Because clearance requirements vary significantly by heater model, wattage, and configuration, we defer to the heater manufacturer's installation manual as the controlling document.

As a general guideline, in traditional (electric or wood-burning) saunas the safest default is to place the panel on the wall opposite or perpendicular to the heater, at or beyond the heater manufacturer's specified minimum clearance. In infrared saunas, the panel can be placed on any wall not occupied by IR emitters. When in doubt, consult your sauna installer, heater manufacturer, or a licensed professional.

For an existing sauna, most customers place the panel inside the sauna and route the power cord through a lower vent or existing opening to a nearby GFCI-protected outlet. For a cleaner setup — or during a new sauna build — a licensed electrician can install a GFCI-protected outlet low on the interior wall of the sauna, in accordance with NEC 210.8 and local building code.

Note: If the outlet supplying the panel is installed inside the sauna, it must be a GFCI (ground-fault circuit-interrupter) outlet per NEC 210.8, which requires GFCI protection for receptacles in indoor damp and wet locations. All electrical work should be performed by a licensed electrician familiar with sauna environments.
